Cheery Christmas Blooms

No fussy measuring here! To make these flowers, simply cut a strip of felt, then cut one petal and use it as a guide to measure the rest. Make them big or small, red or white, and use them to decorate anything. We love how these flowers have a number of layers and plenty of dimension. In this article, you’ll learn how to make this flower two different ways. One way makes a lovely, semi-flat flower, while the other technique makes a beautiful, more dimensional flower.

Supplies & Tools:

  • Felt: red, white, pirate green, dark green
  • Scissors
  • Thread
  • Needle
  • Hot glue gun & glue sticks
  • Beads, buttons, or pompoms
  • Ruler
  • Optional: 12 inches of 30 gauge wire

Directions:

  1. Cut a strip of felt. You can cut it to any desired size. Ours is 10" x 2" and will make a 4" flower.
Note: Keep in mind that the diameter of the finished flower will be twice the length of each petal.
  2. Decide how wide you want the petals to be and cut an incision into the felt. Don’t cut all the way through; leave a 0.5" space from the edge. No need to measure, just freehand it!
  3. Now fold this “petal” over and use it as a guide to measure and cut the rest of the petals.
  4. Once you get to the end, cut off excess felt, if necessary.
  5. Now cut rounded points on each petal.
  6. Take needle and thread and sew a running stitch 0.25" from the bottom edge. We are using contrasting thread to show you here, but you might want to use a matching thread.
Note: Try to sew a consistent pattern with the thread so that the petals fold the same in the next step.
  7. Cinch the petals and tie thread in a knot. As you do this, the petals will form a flower. Double knot the thread and trim excess.
  8. Glue a decorative button in the center of the flower.
  9. Cut a circle from green felt that is the same size as your flower. Holding it behind your flower, cut petals (leaves) by following the outline of the flower.
  10. Place leaves behind the flower, offset a little bit, and glue in place.

Alternate Directions:

  1. Cut a strip of felt to desired size.
  2. Cut strip into rectangles. We have sixteen 1.5" x 0.75" rectangles.
  3. Cut a round point on each rectangle.
  4. Sew a running stitch 0.25" from the bottom edge of each petal, all on the same strand of thread.
  5. Cinch the petals and tie a knot. The petals will form a flower, but notice how they are pointing in many directions.
  6. Arrange the petals by pulling every other petal up and the others down.
  7. Add pompoms/buttons/beads to the center.
  8. Cut a circle from green felt that is the same size as your flower. Holding it behind your flower, cut petals (leaves) by following the outline of the flower.
  9. Place leaves behind the flower, offset a little bit, and glue in place.

Ideas from the elves

  • One at a time, add bead to wire and twist wire. Keep adding beads until desired look is achieved.
  • Make a more 3D flower! Follow the alternate directions to create 2 flowers: one large and one small. Glue or sew the smaller flower onto the larger flower.
