Ingredients

3/4 cup butter or vegetable shortening
1 cup sugar
2 eggs
1 teaspoon vanilla essence
2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 teaspoon salt
2 squares chocolate, unsweetened [1 ounce each], melted and cooled

Directions

  1. When ready to bake, preheat oven to 400 degrees.

  2. Cream butter and sugar in a bowl till light and fluffy. Blend in the eggs and vanilla.

  3. Stir together the flour, baking powder and salt. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the creamed mix; blend well.

  4. Divide dough into 2 parts. Blend the chocolate into 1 half.

  5. Cover and chill both doughs till firm.

  6. Roll each dough into a 12 x 9 inch rectangle

  7. Place chocolate dough on top of the plain dough.

  8. Roll to about 1/4 inch thick. Roll up from the long side.

  9. Wrap in plastic and chill until firm.

  10. Cut into 1/8 inch slices. Place on an ungreased baking sheet.

  11. Bake for 8-10 minutes of until set.

  12. Cool on a wire rack. Serve.
