Heavenly Pecan Cake

14 to 18 servings
Contains nuts, Good for parties/potlucks
2 cups sugar
1/2 cup butter
1 cup shortening
5 egg yolks
2 cups all purpose flour
1 teaspoon soda
1 cup buttermilk
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 1/2 cups chopped pecans
5 egg whites
1 small can coconut
Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
Combine butter and shortening. Add sugar. Cream Well. Add egg yolks and mix well.
Combine flour and soda. Add to creamed mixture alternately with buttermilk. Add vanilla, coconut and nuts. Fold in slightly beaten egg whites.
Spoon into 3 9-inch layer pans.
Bake for 25 minutes.
