Ingredients

1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1 3/4 cups flour
3/4 cup sugar (plus sugar to sprinkle prior to baking)
1/2 cup shortening
1 large egg
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
green and red decorative sugars & various other decorations

Directions

  1. When ready to bake, preheat oven to 375 degrees.

  2. Sift salt and baking powder together with flour.

  3. Mix in shortening and sugar with the flour mixture.

  4. Beat in egg, making sure it is fully mixed; add the vanilla and stir well.

  5. Roll mixture into a log, wrap in wax paper and refrigerate for a few hours.

  6. When ready to use, remove the dough from the refrigerator and roll out on a flat working surface.

  7. Allow children to cut dough using Christmas cookie cutters.

  8. Place on ungreased cookie sheet and decorate cookies with decorative sugars.

  9. Sprinkle a little sugar on each cookie prior to baking.

  10. Bake for 7-10 minutes.

  11. Cool before removing from cooking sheet.

  12. Store in air tight container.
