Ingredients

3/4 cup shortening
1 cup brown sugar
4 tablespoons molasses
2 1/4 cups flour
2 teaspoons baking soda
1/2 teaspoon cloves
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1 teaspoon ginger
1 egg

Directions

  1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees F.

  2. Cream shortening, add sugar gradually and cream thoroughly.

  3. Blend in beaten egg and molasses.

  4. Mix together flour, soda, cloves, cinnamon and ginger to cream mixture. Mix well.

  5. Chill in refrigerator for 1 hour or more.

  6. Shape into balls and dip top in sugar, place plain side down on a greased baking sheet.

  7. Sprinkle each cookie with 2-3 drops of ice water.

  8. Bake 12-15 minutes.

A very good cookie. Do use the ice water, it makes the sugar pretty. I had to watch them carefully and take them out in eleven minutes. Even doing that, some still burned on the bottom. It might not be the recipe, it might be my new oven. I'm not used to it yet.
